A post on living in Durban

July 1, 2008 at 11:15 am 5 comments

Got this from Sweets and for once, I’m actually responding to a meme!

I am: going to make this a Living in Durban theme’d meme

I know: that there is still a lot of Durban I haven’t experienced

I want: to start doing things more cultural

I wish: that I knew more people in different lifestyles to mine so that I could learn more

I hate: accidentally selecting every single one way road in this city when I’m driving

I miss: knowing all the shop attendants by name them asking me how I am

I fear: that I will never be able to live here independently – as big as the city is, I feel lonely sometimes

I feel: like a newbie wherever I go

I smell: ass on my way to work every morning, near Maydon Wharf

I hear: ambulances and sirens at night and it strangely soothes me because it is now the sound of ‘home’

I crave: Essenwood’s avo and fetta rye bread right now

I search: daily for easily read maps to teach me where to go

I wonder: why it took me so long to get here, I’ve wanted it for so long

I regret: not seeing my friends as often as I used to

I love: that every thing is so easily accessible here. The video shop is in spitting distance, the library around the corner, the Pav just up the road, the clubs within cab calling distance.

I ache: when I think of the things I’m missing out on ‘back home’

I am not: going to dwell on it.

I believe: in the kingdom of Love, and that all men here are from planet Mars.

I dance: terribly but I don’t care – it’s a good workout.

I sing: loudly and with tv remotes or hair brushes with my flatmate

I cried last: time I cried. I don’t remember when, not so much of a crier.

I fight: with truck drivers daily on the highway. The hoot at me often. My middle finger gets a lot of excersize.

I write: about Durban constantly, I have a whole chapter in my book dedicated to all the stairs, beggars, hippies and fleamarket type people I come across.

I win: respect once I tell people about Kiera, I don’t know why. Durban people are weird.

I lose: my car keys too often.

I am never: going to believe East Coast Radio again when they say ‘The House & Garden Show is where it’s at’. Lies, all lies.

I always: think of my Mom when I drive past the eThekweni sign, it was our landmark to get to the SAN.

I confuse: myself with someone famous and divine daily, others sometimes believe me.

I listen: to music whenever I can, as loud as I can in my car in the traffic.

I can usually be found: in front of my laptop at home or being a tourist on weekends with either my flatmate, her daughter or someone from home in tow.

I need: a hairy man to keep me warm this winter!

I am happy: when I look out from my balcony and see the city lights. I still can’t get over the beauty that is Durban.

I imagine: that I have found the place I want to grow wrinkly one day. Its called Tease-Hers.

Just South Africa – Photo contest

Are you a photographer? Do you think you could stand a chance of winning? Why not try your luck, you've nothing to lose! I've been asked to be one of 5 judges in Just South Africa's photography contest. I hope to see your entries there!

Sadly, I've been told money, chocolates and free internet are not allowed to affect my judging unbiased opinion. You could try anyway though... Kidding. Relax.

Brick of the moment:

Please applaud:

Mark from YellowLlama who is responsible for the design of my awesome new logo, which will soon be used in a much more flattering light, on a new work-in-progress page.

Huh? What page? There is no page, nevermind. You read nothing!

Thanks again Mark :)

Win a dodgy fruit basket! [Brick of the moment]
