Humphrey Bumphrey Mam

On July 11th, 1965 a girl was born.  She was the youngest of four and judging by pictures, she was a beautiful baby.  She spent the first few years of her life in a broken home where her mother was an alcoholic, her father not around and an abusive step father who spent all the food money on his booze habit, when he wasn’t trying to abuse his wife or her children.

In the fourth year of this little girl’s life, she and her oldest sisters were handed over to a girl’s home for abandoned children.  From a very early age, she was taught rejection.  If it hadn’t been for her three sisters, she wouldn’t have known responsibility or care or love or kindness.  A few years on, in between horrid school holidays with her parents, she met a boy a few years older.  This boy took her home to his mother who then fostered her through her teen age.  She was shown routine, discipline & somewhat old fashion and warped morals that stood their ground until this girl became a woman.

In her adult life, despite being given the saddest example of parenthood, she went on to bare four children and showed devotion and love like no other children knew.  She was their friend, their role model, their confidante and their mother. She sacrificed so many things throughout the years so that her kids could be given their necessities and she never once complained. She taught her children to laugh at life’s diversity, to welcome change and to adapt in times of difficulty.  She taught them love and loyalty and bonding.  She taught them how to be responsible, caring & mindful of others feelings.

Somehow, despite all the bad things in life, this person developed a wicked sense of humor, a sharp wit and a mischievous mind. When she grew older, she had a laugh that would melt snow, an ability to make fun of herself in the face of humiliation, a flare for creativity, a talent to make others feel good about themselves, and the sharpest tongue on the face of the planet.

This woman overcame everything she should’ve been, had she gone with society’s perception, against all odds.

Today, I want to out this woman.

She is someone who feels no shame in wearing bright orange.

She is someone who has more love to go around than most people I know.

She is someone who celebrates every day she has with the people she love.

She is kind. She is mental. She is funny. She is intelligent. She is inspiring.

She is my mother, and I am proud of her.

Happy Birthday, Mam.  I run out of words of love for you.

Just South Africa – Photo contest

Are you a photographer? Do you think you could stand a chance of winning? Why not try your luck, you've nothing to lose! I've been asked to be one of 5 judges in Just South Africa's photography contest. I hope to see your entries there!

Sadly, I've been told money, chocolates and free internet are not allowed to affect my judging unbiased opinion. You could try anyway though... Kidding. Relax.

Please applaud:

Mark from YellowLlama who is responsible for the design of my awesome new logo, which will soon be used in a much more flattering light, on a new work-in-progress page.

Huh? What page? There is no page, nevermind. You read nothing!

Thanks again Mark :)
